EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
Early Childhood educators know that preschool children are concrete thinkers and need to touch, hear, see, smell taste and move in order to understand their world...so Forty Carrots teachers create and recreate activities that encourage children to learn through exploration and discovery.
Monthly themes provide a framework for thesse activities and theme-related projects foster a desire to learn more. In addition to being hands-on, Forty Carrot's Preschool curriculum is developmentally appropriate. In other words, activities are geared to the overall developmental level of the children in the class as well as to individual children's gifts, challenges, temperaments and learning styles.
While promoting positive social and emotional development above all else, the Preshool incorporates Handwriting Without Tears, The Creative Curriculum, and Florida School Readiness Performance Standards into it's innovative programming.
The Preschool is perhaps best known for it's creative approach to teaching. Instead of simply instructing children in the "correct" way of performing a task, our teachers guide children into discovering, or seemingly inventing, the task itself. For example, a Preschool teacher may want to introduce the concept of obsorption. She will pose the question, "How can we get the water out of the red bowl and into the blue bowl without touvhing either bowl?" The children will suggest solutions, a spoon!, a ladle!, a turkey baster!, a sponge! ... The teacher will encourage brainstorming and experimentation, finding merit in each suggestion. In the end, the children will know that sponges absorb water and they will remember it because they discovered it for themselves!
GOALS Based on our understanding of young children and their development, broad goals are set for each age group and then individual goals are set for each child. But, in general, our teachers all strive to:
- Encourage positive social interactions - sharing, communicating, cooperating, and caring.
- Enhance children's self-esteem, self-sufficiency, and feelings of self-worth.
- Stimulate cognitive development. We challenge the mind and spark curiosity.
- Prepare children for success in Kindergarten and beyond.
- Foster creativity in art, language, music, and thinking. We are process, not product, oriented & we value originality!
- Introduce a wide variety of activities to exercise both the large and small muscles of the body.
- Provide a language-rich environment. We expose children to the written and spoken word and in turn, encourage their writing and storytelling.
- Teach respect for the world around us.
- Celebrate diversity.
